Did you know that the two most important fashion items you'll ever need are a great haircut and a fantastic pair of shoes?

Personally, I couldn't have made this up. After all, I consider myself a fashion flunk. It was my sister-in-law, a corporate executive at Proctor and Gamble -- and who could have beat Imelda Marcos hands-down in a shoe-collection contest -- who taught me this crucial fashion fact.

I remember the very pair of summer sandals I purchased after she told me the secret. "Spend no less than $100," she told me, "it'll be worth it." Against my nature, I did. Shiny black leather sandals with flattering, thin straps and a rounded-square heel. I loved them from the start. I showed off my shiny lavender nail polish. (Sometimes blue -- this was back in the late 90s, after all.) I can't begin to tell you the number of times I got complimented on my shoes. Or my feet, for that matter. A bus attendant at Peter Pan made sure to comment on my "pretty toes" as he loaded my baggage. The blue ones, by the way.

It's true. After your face and the haircut that shows it off, the first thing people notice about your wardrobe is your shoes. Try it yourself. Check out what women are wearing and try NOT to look at their feet. I dare you.
